Library Basics

Introduction

This guide is an introduction to finding library resources on a topic related to a pending U.S. Supreme Court case for the UWP 101 class.

Use the Article Databases tab to select a database to search for articles.  For additional resource suggestions, try using one of the Subject Guides for descriptions and links to more databases and resources.

Research Strategy

1. What are you interested in researching/writing about, and what are the keywords that describe the topic?

2. Which academic/subject disciplines might study your topic?

3. What types of sources would you like to find (or are you required to use)?

Types of Sources:Research Tool:
Books Harvest Catalog
Articles Databases
Websites (reputable) Commercial Search Engine

4. What is available on your topic in reputable sources?

Evaluating sources

Consider these criteria to determine if your sources are reputable:

Author:  Who produced the information? What can you find about the author’s credentials and affiliations? Are they qualified to write about the topic?

Publication Type:  Where was the item published? Essays in scholarly books and articles in peer-reviewed journals are written by experts and have undergone rigorous scrutiny and editing prior to publication.

Accuracy:  Does the author cite references to support his/her thesis? Are the references also from scholarly and credible sources? Does the information seem to be objective, impartial and free from bias?

Timeframe: When was the source published? Is the information still relevant?
